BREAKING: Obama Runs Another Online Lottery After Being Warned by Law Enforcement

Law enforcement warned the Obama campaign against running lotteries, but Obama is doing it again anyway. We encourage our readers to report this Web page to their states’ gambling law enforcement agencies. (Google cache of the Web page touting the lottery)
Obama camp’s illegal lottery modified: Campaign’s promotion strayed into definition of banned gambling reports,

Democrat Barack Obama’s presidential campaign has moved quickly to fix a promotion that strayed into the area of illegal gambling after WND broke the story on the activity.

The campaign was offering a chance to be picked for a trip to the Democratic National Convention for a contribution of at least $5. However, as a gambling analyst for Colorado-based Focus on the Family told WND, that not only probably violated state laws banning gambling, it also probably violated federal bans.

Doug Forsman, a special agent with Minnesota’s Department of Public Safety, had confirmed the illegality of the promotion.

He gave the campaign two options, the newspaper said, to void the contest where such bans exist or to change the rules to allow people to participate without gambling any of their money.

Forsman confirmed Kendall Burman, staff counsel at Obama’s Chicago headquarters, informed him the “donation,” which had been a requirement earlier, would be made optional.

Today, October 31, the Obama campaign broke its promise to Minnesota’s Department of Public Safety.

Nowhere in this E-mail does it say you can enter this lottery without making a donation, thus contravening the promise the Obama campaign made to Minnesota’s Department of Public Safety: “Forsman confirmed Kendall Burman, staff counsel at Obama’s Chicago headquarters, informed him the “donation,” which had been a requirement earlier, would be made optional.” Now let’s take a look at https://donate.barackobama.com/backstage2. Were it to tell you how to enter without making a donation, the Obama campaign would probably still be in compliance with the law. Here is what it says:

Make a Donation to Get a Front Row Seat to History

You could be there with Barack on Election Night when the results come in.

We’re planning a big event that will include tens of thousands of supporters in Grant Park in downtown Chicago.

Some of the best seats are reserved for 5 people who give for the first time before midnight on Sunday, November 2nd.

You and a guest will be flown to Chicago, put up in a hotel, and brought backstage for the biggest night of the campaign.

Make a donation and you could join Barack on Election Night.

Your contribution is not tax-deductible for federal income tax purposes. An individual may contribute a maximum of $2,300 per election (the primary and general are separate elections). By submitting your contribution, you agree that $2,300 is designated for the general election. Offer void where prohibited by law.

Nowhere on this Web page can we find a statement to the effect that you can enter this lottery without donating money, although it says “offer void where prohibited by law.” We wonder whether this constitutes consumer fraud of some kind, because the offer (of a chance to win a trip to Chicago) is void where prohibited by law, but the Web page doesn’t identify the states in which it is prohibited. People in Minnesota might, for example, donate money without realizing that they have no chance to win because (as shown above) lotteries of this nature are illegal in their state.

John McCain said that Barack Obama paid for his half-hour commercial with broken promises–his promise to accept Federal campaign financing and its associated spending limits. Now he is going to pay for the final stretch of the election with more broken promises–in this case, a broken promise to a law enforcement agency to not run illegal lotteries over the Internet.

We encourage our readers to report https://donate.barackobama.com/backstage2 to their states’ gambling law enforcement agencies, if lotteries (other than those run by the state, and possibly raffles by nonprofit charities) are illegal in their states.
