A review of recent actions by Abraham Foxman and the Anti-Defamation League raises some unpleasant questions. Is the ADL carrying forward its stated mission of opposing anti-Semitism, racism, and other forms of bigotry, or is it running interference for the often anti-Semitic left wing of the Democratic Party?
This November, Mr. Foxman issued a joint statement with the prominent racist and anti-Semite Al Sharpton and his National Action Network. The National Action Network is the same organization that, under Sharpton’s personal leadership, paraded around a Jewish-owned store in Harlem while yelling racial and anti-Semitic epithets, along with an arson threat that was later put into effect. There is no difference between what Sharpton and the National Action Network did to Freddy’s Fashion Mart and what the Ku Klux Klan once did to African-Americans who moved into the “wrong” neighborhoods. By making a joint statement with Sharpton, and by lending what is left of the Anti-Defamation League’s good name to this, Foxman sanitized and whitewashed a vicious anti-Semite and hate monger in the same league as David Duke and Tom Metzger. Al Sharpton could become a serious liability to next year’s Democratic nominee, and a clean bill of health from the ADL would go a long way toward reducing this vulnerability.
Senator Hillary Clinton (NY): “I have enjoyed a long and positive relationship with Reverend Al Sharpton and National Action Network, and I don’t ever remember saying “no” to them and I intend to remain their partner in civil rights as I clean the dirt from under the carpet in the oval office when I am elected President”
Senator Barack Obama (Ill): “Reverend Sharpton is a voice for the voiceless, and a voice for the dispossessed. What National Action Network has done is so important to change America, and it must be changed from the bottom up.”
It is obvious that, if the Republicans have enough brains to operate a common turnip, they will circulate the appropriate image (Clinton or Obama, depending on the nominee) along with Al Sharpton’s vicious track record. This is why Al Sharpton is in desperate need of sanitization and a whitewash, and we have to ask serious questions about Abraham Foxman’s motives for giving him one.
This question becomes even more serious when we recap the Anti-Defamation’s role in possibly saving MoveOn.org from total organizational destruction last year. Last September, MoveOn.org was visibily shaken by the revelation of reams of anti-Semitic hate speech (including outright blood libels of Jews), as well as smears against Catholics and evangelical Christians, at its now-disgraced Action Forum. MoveOn.org finally had to take down the Action Forum permanently: a major defeat because this was the organization’s prized method of getting feedback from its members while stimulating discussion. Had the Republicans capitalized on this (Jim Gerlach, R-PA was the only one to do so), and had there been more publicity, MoveOn.org would probably have been destroyed outright. The same might have happened had the ADL not sanitized MoveOn.org and given it a clean bill of health.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) welcomed the responsiveness of MoveOn.org Political Action in removing anti-Semitic messages that had been posted on the Action Forum on their Web site.
In response to a letter of concern, Eli Pariser, Executive Director of MoveOn Political Action, has been in direct contact with ADL. He indicated that MoveOn.org found the comments abhorrent and had them removed.
ADL is pleased with Mr. Pariser’s responsiveness to our concerns and believes the matter has been resolved satisfactorily.
The Anti-Defamation League stuck by this story despite being given independently verifiable proof that MoveOn.org had not even removed more than a couple of token pieces of hate speech (the “Jew Lieberman” slur being among them). Here is our E-mail of September 15 to the ADL. At the time, the Action Forum links were still active, and the ADL could have therefore verified for itself that Eli Pariser lied about removing the anti-Semitic messages. Nonetheless, ADL is still sticking with the above story on behalf of MoveOn.org.

Subject: Anti-Semitic slurs NOT removed by MoveOn.org
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=windows-1252; format=flowed
Per our discussion: MoveOn.org may have gotten rid of “Jew Lieberman” and “media-owning Jewish pigs” but every single one of the following was online as of yesterday evening and the ones I checked are still online right now.
In addition, MoveOn was not truthful about not seeing “Jew Lieberman” because it was extremely diligent about finding and removing things I posted, such as “When the N word is used, a lady or gentleman leaves the room or turns his back” as opposed to voicing approval of the slur– which is what the Action Forum participants did by voting “Agree” with anti-Semitic and in a couple of cases racist commentary. The worst of the latter said that Black soldiers should be segregated and disarmed because they are likely to mutiny over their “oppression” by Caucasians.
“We can all see how AIPAC/Israel has taken control of America. Not to get nasty but jews have a long history of subverting governments for their own enrichment and glory to the detriment of whole societies. Many more than “6 million” have died by semetic aggression, 100’s of millions even, remember the conqueror writes history. Even the roman empire feared jewish power.”
http://www.actionforum.com/forum/scores.html?comment_id=294138 (5 of 6 agree): 361 Representatives who labeled Hamas, a Foreign Terrorist Organization as defined by the U.S. State Department, a “terrorist sanctuary” are denounced as “316 Jews.”
http://www.actionforum.com/forum/scores.html?&comment_id=304961 12 out of 14 agree, “Removing all Israeli obsessed Jews from congress would stop a lot of killing.”
http://www.actionforum.com/forum/scores.html?&comment_id=302833 9 out of 10 agree, “I respect everybody’s opinion but obviously some people hate Jews. I am sure they have their reasons but they should not let whatever bad experience they had with some Jews (and I am sure they had some) interfere with their judgment. ”
http://www.actionforum.com/forum/scores.html?comment_id=302690 “American Jews pay the Israeli cowards to kill with missiles.”
This one is very telling. A decent liberal posted an objection to an accusation that Jews had “hijacked” our democracy. 8 of 16 MoveOn Action Forum participants voted, “Disagree.”
http://www.actionforum.com/forum/scores.html?comment_id=307781 “As an American (forget my ethnic heritage) I am offended and outraged that anybody would accuse the Jewish people of stealing, extorting, or swindling the news media or Democracy away from America.
This is exactly the kind of Anit-Semetic attitude I see growing daily on MoveOn and I am embarrassed to be part of this forum for people like you.”
And 14 of 21 voted to disagree with this protest against the anti-Semitic slurs:
“Jews do not view other human beings as expendable although Frank may be the exception. In fact, the Jewish religion is highly moral and ethical and introduced those concepts, along with the monotheism I’m guessing Frank believes in, to mankind. Moreover, Israel, unlike many other nations, has banned torture against its enemies – even though its enemies are bombarding its towns with missiles.”
http://www.actionforum.com/forum/scores.html?&comment_id=307763 8 of 11 agree, “Jewish, Joseph Lieberman supports Iraq war for Israel, the Lebanon war for Israel, and the oppression of Palestinians for Israel. He also supports sanctions and wars against Iran and Syria for Israel.”
http://www.actionforum.com/forum/scores.html?&comment_id=307659 8 of 10 agree with the following:
I hate using the word F—k mostly because it reflects poorly on me.
A few Jews just doesn’t get it for me.
The US house voted 410-8 in support of Israel and of course AIPAC and its supporters are in the US. There are a lot of these nasty Jews.
You could write a book about the repugnant things the, push’em in to the sea tribe, has done. So how do we describe them?
http://www.actionforum.com/forum/scores.html?comment_id=307458 11 of 15 agree that Israel should be boycotted.
http://www.actionforum.com/forum/scores.html?comment_id=307308 19 of 21 agree that “the The Israel Lobby Has Taken Over American Democracy”
http://www.actionforum.com/forum/scores.html?&comment_id=307279 7 of 7 agree that Israelis are ashamed of their Jewish past.
If you are a Jew and want respect;
Denounce Israel’s abuse and occupation of Palestinians for the last 50 yrs and stop spreading the lies you heard on Fox Israel News.
Condemn AIPACs manipulation of the US foreign policy.
Read and acknowledge the validity of the “Israeli Lobby” papers.
Until you do you’ll just sound like the Bush administration defending their reasons for going to war.
If you just can’t do it deny that you are Jewish.
Our parents abused some of us, some were drunks, some were divorced and some had Jewish parents. We don’t have to hang on to our past.
In addition, this OFFICIAL MOVEON.ORG BULLETIN (not a loose cannon on their Action Forum) said this (http://www.moveon.org/moveonbulletin/bulletin13.html#8)
Nearly all PNAC participants, whether Jewish or Christian, are right-wing Zionists who support Ariel Sharon’s Likud Party. In 1996, Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, and others drafted a paper for incoming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urging him to make “a clean break” from the Oslo peace process preferring “peace through strength,” including the ouster of Saddam Hussein.
This essay describes many of the familiar neo-conservatives as having “dual loyalties,” making policy decisions in the interests of the State of Israel as much as the United States.
In other words, it is a matter of proven record that ADL was given independently-verifiable proof that MoveOn.org had lied about removing the hate speech. Why did ADL continue to whitewash and sanitize MoveOn.org? By doing so, it may well have saved MoveOn.org’s, as well as several Democratic House and Senate candidates’, collective bacon.
Now back to Hillary Clinton’s or Barack Obama’s “running mate,” Al Sharpton of the National Action Network. This is not the first time that Abraham Foxman has gone out of his way to protect this professional Jew-hater and racist. While the Jewish Defense Organization often engages in heated rhetoric with which we disagree, its complaint is telling: ““Recently, Abe Foxman of the ADL appeared on Channel Nine News to denounce the JDO as racist for attacking Al Sharpton and calling him a black David Duke.”
It is hard to conceive of any motive, outside a desire to protect Democrats like John Kerry (2004), Ned Lamont (“Jew Lieberman’s” opponent in 2006), Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama from the consequences of empowering and endorsing a professional hate monger, for Abraham Foxman to defend Al Sharpton in this manner. Al Sharpton is the Black equivalent of David Duke, and this is why he needs the Anti-Defamation League to shill for him and sanitize him.
Al Sharpton: The Democrat’s David Duke by Jeff Jacoby
…1991: A Hasidic Jewish driver in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights section accidentally kills Gavin Cato, a 7-year-old black child, and antisemitic riots erupt. Sharpton races to pour gasoline on the fire. At Gavin’s funeral he rails against the “diamond merchants” — code for Jews — with “the blood of innocent babies” on their hands. He mobilizes hundreds of demonstrators to march through the Jewish neighborhood, chanting, “No justice, no peace.” A rabbinical student, Yankel Rosenbaum, is surrounded by a mob shouting “Kill the Jews!” and stabbed to death.
Right. Al Sharpton said Jews have “the blood of innocent babies on their hands” while his followers yelled “Kill the Jews,” reenacted the Night of the Broken Glass, and committed an anti-Semitic hate crime. Abraham Foxman is now whitewashing him and sanitizing him. Jacoby continues,
1995: When the United House of Prayer, a large black landlord in Harlem, raises the rent on Freddy’s Fashion Mart, Freddy’s white Jewish owner is forced to raise the rent on his subtenant, a black-owned music store. A landlord-tenant dispute ensues; Sharpton uses it to incite racial hatred. “We will not stand by,” he warns malignantly, “and allow them to move this brother so that some white interloper can expand his business.” Sharpton’s National Action Network sets up picket lines; customers going into Freddy’s are spat on and cursed as “traitors” and “Uncle Toms.” Some protesters shout, “Burn down the Jew store!” and simulate striking a match. “We’re going to see that this cracker suffers,” says Sharpton’s colleague Morris Powell. On Dec. 8, one of the protesters bursts into Freddy’s, shoots four employees point-blank, then sets the store on fire. Seven employees die in the inferno.
…The only allusion to his ugly record was a vague quote from a local minister: “He obviously has a lot of history and controversy to overcome.” That was quickly countered by Sharpton’s own self-description as a man known “for my fights against racial profiling and discrimination.”
Well, that isn’t what Steve Pagones [a victim of Sharpton’s defamation in the Tawana Brawley scandal] or the family of Yankel Rosenbaum or the loved ones of those who were burned alive at Freddy’s Fashion Mart know him for. As they can testify, Sharpton is a vicious liar and a dangerous bigot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVJ14uL22R4 to hear Al Sharpton use the phrase, “Jewing numbers up and down.”
Again, we have to ask Abraham Foxman why he is sanitizing this individual by associating what is left of the Anti-Defamation League’s good name with him. The fact that the ADL also sanitized MoveOn.org leads to some very unsavory assumptions: namely, that the organization’s opposition to anti-Semitism and other forms of hate speech end where the left wing of the Democratic Party begins.
